Feed into the detached garage
The UF cable is buried at the correct depth. What's wrong here?
- The cable comes up out of the ground with no raceway protecting it
- UF cable may not be exposed to sunlight above grade
- The feed must enter the garage at least 8 ft above grade
- The box must be at least 18 in above grade to stay above the snow

The answer
The direct-buried cable emerges from grade and runs up the wall with no raceway or enclosure protecting it.
Correct choice: 1. The cable comes up out of the ground with no raceway protecting it
300.5(D)(1) requires direct-buried cable coming up out of the ground to be protected by a raceway or enclosure from the required cover depth (never more than 18 in down) to at least 8 ft above finished grade, or to the box or point of entrance if that is lower (300.5(D)(2)). This cable is stapled bare up the foundation and siding right where the string trimmer, mower, and edger work, and 340.12 also bars UF wherever it is subject to physical damage. Once the jacket is nicked, water gets in and the cable fails or energizes whatever it touches.
How to fix it
Sleeve the cable in a raceway (Schedule 80 PVC or another 300.5(D)(4) raceway where subject to physical damage) from at least 18 in below grade up into the box, with a bushing or fitting on the buried end to protect the cable (300.5(H)). Use an expansion fitting if frost heave can move the box relative to the sleeve (300.5(J)).

NEC 2023 300.5(D)(1) — Protection from Damage: Emerging from Grade
Direct-buried conductors and cables emerging from grade and specified in columns 1 and 4 of Table 300.5(A) shall be protected by enclosures or raceways extending from the minimum cover distance below grade required by 300.5(A) to a point at least 8 ft above finished grade. The protection is never required to extend more than 18 in below finished grade.

Where the enclosure or raceway is subject to physical damage, the conductors shall be installed in EMT, rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, RTRC-XW, Schedule 80 PVC conduit, or equivalent.

2026 NEC:same rule and number. None of the 2026 Chapter 3 change summaries found mention a change to the emerging-from-grade protection rule in 300.5(D)(1) (raceway from required cover, max 18 in, to 8 ft above grade). The rule is assumed unchanged, but the snippets checked did not confirm the exact 2026 numbering. Confidence: low
Minnesota
Minnesota enforces the 2023 NEC, adopted by reference without amendments in Minn. Rules 1315.0200 (Minn. Stat. 326B.35), effective July 1, 2023. No Minnesota amendment to 300.5 or 340.12 exists. Frost heave makes the 300.5(J) earth-movement provision a real concern here; inspectors often want a slip joint or expansion fitting on the riser. The Board of Electricity adopted the 2026 NEC, also without amendment, for permits filed on or after Aug. 17, 2026 (exams moved to the 2026 NEC on Sept. 8, 2026); see the 2026 NEC note on this drill.
How Minnesota adopts the NECWhy the other choices are wrong
- UF cable may not be exposed to sunlight above grade. 340.12 bars UF from direct sun only when it is not identified as sunlight resistant, and this cable is printed SUNLIGHT RESISTANT. The problem here is physical protection, not UV.
- The feed must enter the garage at least 8 ft above grade. That misreads 300.5(D)(1). The 8 ft figure is how high the protection must extend; the cable can enter a box or the building lower than that, as long as the raceway or enclosure covers it all the way up.
- The box must be at least 18 in above grade to stay above the snow. The NEC has no 18 in mounting height for an outdoor box. The 18 in figure in 300.5(D)(1) is the maximum depth below grade the protection must reach.
